Amsterdam City Breaks

A guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is still right up there as one of the most captivating European city break destinations around. The bustling Dutch capital can claim to have it all, from a fascinating historic core with over 7,000 listed buildings, a legendary night time party vibe and some of the continent’s foremost art museums. There is plenty to see and do in Amsterdam and something for every conceivable taste. For example, you can visit an amazing number of museums dedicated to such varied tastes as fine art, football, vodka, cannabis, and even the sex industry. Major highlights include the incomparable Rijksmuseum for priceless Dutch and Flemish old masters and the inspiring Anne Frank House.

Excellent range of world-class museums

Getting around the historic centre is a breeze on foot, but best enjoyed with a relaxing canal cruise or a day of cycling. Take a tour on two wheels around the so called ‘canal ring’ which features mainly 17th century merchant houses and enchanting white wooden drawbridges. Combine it with an evening in the historic and now ever so trendy Jordaan district, with its vibrant café culture, markets and trendy fashion boutiques. The notorious Red Light District is still in existence, and while hardly a family friendly place, it is safe to stroll around, and features numerous old historic buildings and has a vibrant mix of bars, restaurants and cafes.

Fascinating sightseeing for free

Cheap city breaks in Amsterdam can really save a packet with a wealth of free entertainment and attractions for all the family. There are guided tours at the Brouwerij brewery and many of Amsterdam’s diamond factories, free walking city tours, lunchtime concerts at the Concertgebouw and highbrow performances at the Vondelpark open-air theatre, all without spending a penny. The city is known for its legendary club culture that never fails to live up to all the hype, and the city’s nightlife is dazzling to say the least, featuring raging techno clubs, jazz bars, impossibly trendy lounges and everything in between.
