Arc de Triomphe (Paris)

Arc de Triomphe - A Parisian icon
Located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées is the commanding triumphal arch, officially known as Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. It is one of the most visited Parisian sights, and an iconic image that is inescapable during short breaks in Paris. Built in 1806 to commemorate the Napoleonic Wars, it is the focus of French national remembrance and celebration and even forms an attractive backdrop to the final stage of the Tour de France each year. At just 160 feet in height, it does not dominate the Paris skyline like the Eiffel Tower for example, but its strategic position offers unrestricted views along the Champs-Élysées. You can see the Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries Gardens, and in the opposite direction, the gleaming Grande Arche de la Défense.

Arc de Triomphe - An enlightening history lesson
Many visitors on weekend breaks in Paris are content to simply admire the wonderful adornments at ground level which include exuberant Romanesque sculptures, Napoleonic friezes and the eternal flame of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Inside the Arch is a small and enlightening museum which documents its construction and has a detailed background on French military history with various artefacts, photographs and interactive TV screens. The admission price includes the lift to the 'attic' and open air observation gallery.

Arc de Triomphe - Captivating views of the city
If you are feeling a little energetic, the Arc de Triomphe can be climbed by way of an attractive spiral staircase leading to the attic which features a permanent exhibition on 'war and peace' and a further series of sculptured friezes depicting historic battles. It has a quintessential French flavour, and offers a telling insight into both imperial history and French patriotism. From here it is just a short climb to the observation point and a 360 degree vista of the city that is sure to be a highlight of cheap city breaks in Paris.
