Athens weather makes it a popular year-round city break destination. Athens is one of the sunniest cities in Europe and has low average annual rainfall. The weather in Athens is typically Mediterranean, but significantly sunnier and warmer for more of the year than Mediterranean destinations in Spain and France. Athens usually enjoys warm sunny weather from early spring to late autumn. Summer weather in Athens is hot, with virtually non-stop sunshine. Athens winter weather is variable, but there is a good chance of enjoying mild temperatures and sunny days.

Summer weather in Athens can be very hot indeed but this is when Athens receives most visitors.  Athens heats up in the afternoon so make the most of delightful mornings and cooler evening for sightseeing. Athens summer weather is idyllic for pavement cafes and romantic al fresco dining in the Plaka. Rain is extremely rare in summer. Average Athens temperatures in July and August are well into the 30ºs and it can get much hotter during heat waves. The summer heat is not very humid and is occasionally tempered by strong winds. If you do not cope well with hot weather you should try to avoid July and August.

Most Athens residents would say spring is the best time to visit Athens. And in Athens even February can sometime feel like spring! Another good time to take an Athens city break is in the autumn. Sunny Athens weather often continues well into November. Our own recommendation would be May and June and September and October, when temperatures are beautiful and there are far fewer tourists than the summer. Athens winter weather is very mild by UK standards but make sure you are prepared for the chance of cold, particularly at night. Like Madrid in Spain, winter weather in Athens often features beautiful bright sunshine. Average sunshine in Athens remains a healthy 5 hours a day throughout the winter and has already hit 8 hours by April!
