While Barcelona galleries cannot match Madrid for the Old Masters it may outdo its rival when it comes to 20th century and contemporary art. The Picasso Museum has the world's largest collection and offers a fascinating insight into the artist’s development. Fundació de Joan Miró has a superb collection of one of the greatest Catalan artists. The Museu d'Art Comtemporani has an outstanding 20th century collection. Other rewarding galleries include MNAC (museum of Catalan art), MACBA (museum of modern art) and the Caixa Forum.
The Sea
Barceloneta is the atmospheric old fishing neighbourhood and has good examples of Gothic architecture. The harbour area was transformed by the Olympics and is frequently cited as a classic example of positive city regeneration. A superb area to walk, to shop, to people watch, to refresh the mind and body and to visit top attractions like the excellent aquarium. In the summer head for Icaria and Barceloneta beaches.
Food & Drink
Catalan cuisine has an international reputation. Barcelona offers economical workers cafes, excellent tapas bars, superb seafood and some extremely stylish fine dining. Barceloneta is good for tapas. There are excellent little restaurants in trendy neighbourhoods like Gracia and the Born. Don’t miss out on the lively, atmospheric tapas bars in Barcelona markets like La Boqueria and the Mercat St Antoni. Barcelona nightlife has something for everyone, with plenty of interesting trendy bars in the neighbourhoods and no shortage of stylish, fashionable, late-night clubs.
