Barri Gotic (Barcelona)

The Barrio Gotic, or Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, is the city's historic centre, located within easy reach of Las Ramblas and stretching as far as the Mediterranean seafront. Many of its buildings date back to medieval times, and there are even some well-preserved Roman walls. The Barri Gotic is a captivating maze of winding lanes, opening out onto historic market squares such as the attractive Placa Sant Jaume, featuring the old city hall and presidential palace. On short breaks in Barcelona, you can explore the area easily on foot and much of it closed to motorised transport.

 

It is quite easy to lose your bearings along its twisting cobbled lanes, but this part of its appeal as there is an abundance of interesting architecture just waiting to be discovered during long weekends in Barcelona. The area is also home to hundreds of cafes and tapas bars to rest awhile and soak up the atmosphere. The quarter is a major tourist attraction, and its most compelling feature is the historic cathedral which dates back to the 13th century. It is one of the finest examples of gothic design in Spain and its central tower is a fine place to take in breezy views over the city and coastline.

 

The quarter is filled with some lovely timeless churches such as the Basilica of La Mercè and the Santa Maria del Pi, boasting a colourful rose window reputed to be the largest in the world. On cheap city breaks in Barcelona, you will discover a hive of activity in its squares and back streets, where a myriad of tiny artisan's shops and market traders rub shoulders with delightful pavement cafes. Head to the Portal de L´Angel if trendy designer fashions are your thing. The Barri Gotic is also one of Barcelona’s most desirable districts to live in and has more than its fair share of animated late night bars and clubs.
