Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Koekelberg – Eye catching unique design
Set on a hill in the far west of Brussels is the national basilica of the Sacred Heart, one of the largest churches in the world. It is a visually arresting landmark designed in the art deco style and is an imposing sight on the city skyline. It is topped by a 300 feet high dome which offers some of the finest views during cheap city breaks in Brussels. The layout was inspired by the more famous Sacre Coeur basilica in Paris but it has a style all its own and as unique a place of worship as you are likely to find in Europe.
Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Koekelberg – Exuberantly styled interior
The 1930s art deco theme continues inside, where you will find exuberant flecked marble, dazzling bronze statues and adorned throughout in yellow terracotta. Huge stained glass windows offer a modern take on the life on Christ and are designed to allow abundant natural sunlight in. The central nave is over 400 feet long and can comfortably accommodate 2,000 worshippers. On short breaks in Brussels, you can attend regular catholic services which are performed simultaneously in both French and Dutch.
Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Koekelberg – More than just a place of worship
It is not only the main focus of religious life for the Koekelberg district of Brussels but is also a popular cultural venue which hosts secular exhibitions, conferences and concerts. It also houses its own catholic radio station, a theatre and museum. On weekend breaks in Brussels, you will have full unrestricted access when services are not taking place and entrance is free to all. A definite must is to finish off your visit with a trip up to the top of the cupola for lovely views of the city and surrounding countryside.
