Berlin Things To Do

Sightseeing
Top Berlin attractions include the massive Brandenburg Gate and the reconstructed Pariser Platz alongside. Walk from here to the beautiful Unter den Linden Boulevard. Another favourite Berlin tourist attraction is the old Berlin Wall border crossing at Check Point Charlie and its accompanying museum. The Eastside Gallery is a vast open-air gallery featuring large sections of the infamous wall. Visitors inevitably congregate at Potsdamer Platz, which has come to symbolise the rebuilding of Berlin since the fall of the wall in 1989. The Story of Berlin is an entertaining and informative exhibition featuring a 1970’s nuclear bunker.

Beer Gardens & Cafes
Berlin beer gardens are a superb way to cool down in the summer. You will find beer gardens in central Berlin and out in the suburbs too. Long communal tables are a good way to mix with the locals. Try famous beer like Berliner Weisse, Weissbier and Hefeweizen. Berlin is particularly well stocked with waterfront cafes, floating bar restaurants and pavement cafes. Berlin nightlife is fascinatingly diverse, with a strong “alternative” music scene.

Art
The art scene is particularly vibrant in Berlin, with many galleries housed in striking buildings. The outstanding Museum of Contemporary Art in the Hamburger Bahnhof is housed in an old train station. The Picture Gallery at the Cultural Forum in the Tiergarten has a fantastic collection of old masters. The Old National Gallery features art of the 19th century. Explore the Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg areas for small contemporary galleries. Berlin’s reputation for contemporary art means it attracts the world’s finest temporary exhibitions.

Museums
Berlin is a Mecca for museum fans. Impressive new museums open almost every year in Berlin and feature some of the city’s most spectacular buildings. Berlin’s Museum Island is already a fascinating tourist hub and promises to be unforgettable when completed. The Jewish Museum and the adjacent Berlin Museum are striking in terms of architecture and contents. Other popular Berlin museums include the film museum on Potsdamer Platz.

Architecture
The re-unification of Germany and the fall of the wall gave Berlin a unique opportunity to rebuild the centre of the city. The result is a fascinating mix of contemporary architectural styles found in Potsdamer Platz, Leipziger Platz, Friedrichstraße and Pariser Platz. Visit exciting projects like the new train station, the new Reichstag and the work in progress on Museum Island. As well as modern masterpieces Berlin features a host of fascinating 19th and 20th century architecture that reflects the city’s history.
