Charles Bridge (Prague)

Charles Bridge - Spanning centuries of Czech history
Spanning over 500 metres across the Vltava River in central Prague, Charles Bridge is widely considered to be one of the most astonishing Gothic bridges still in existence. It links the Old Town with Prague Castle, and for centuries was the only link across the water. It dates back to the 14th century and still retains most of its original features. It is Prague's most visited free attraction and provides a wonderful vantage point for some of the city's most attractive waterfront architecture. It is a must-see during short breaks in Prague and becomes bathed in shimmering illuminations after dark.

Charles Bridge - A vibrant meeting place
Busy throughout the day with strolling families and sightseers, Charles Bridge becomes a vibrant after dark hang out with all manner of eccentric buskers, painters and street entertainers, yet it still retains a timeless romantic ambience, beloved of strolling couples. Accessible by pedestrians only, Charles Bridge is where locals come to let their hair down during the festive season and on national holidays. On long weekend breaks in Prague, you will love to spend time admiring the 30 gilded baroque statues depicting local saints and historical figures, and exploring its three enchanting bridge towers.

Charles Bridge – A colourful and photogenic marketplace
To learn more about the bridge's tumultuous history, which has included fierce battles, uprisings and even public hangings, the Charles Bridge Museum offers a colourful journey into Prague's past. There are guided tours and lectures on Czech art and history and a charming collection of old photographs and artefacts. Each and every day, a large number of traders set up shop and it becomes a thriving marketplace of antique booksellers, pavement artists and typical tourist souvenirs. It can become a bit of a tourist trap at times but is still an unforgettable part of cheap city breaks in Prague.
