Dublin Castle – An imposing city landmark
Built on an old Viking settlement in the 13th century, Dublin Castle has variously been used as a fortress, a prison, state treasury, courts of law and as the seat of English rule over Ireland. Little of its original structure remains, having been extensively rebuilt in the 17th century. Nowadays it is used for ceremonial and state occasions, but a large proportion of it is open daily to visitors. On cheap city breaks in Dublin, the historically inclined will relish viewing its opulent state rooms which include the grandiose St Patricks Hall, the most lavishly adorned interior in Ireland. The historic state apartments are still used to accommodate visiting heads of state and feature a wonderful array of artwork and elegant regency furnishings.
Dublin Castle – Explore lavish state apartments
A guided tour of the castle and grounds is the most rewarding way to explore, especially if time is limited during weekends in Dublin. You will be regaled with legends and tall tales as you admire the gothic Chapel Royal, which houses an arts centre, the state corridors and drawing room and the original Viking fortifications at the Undercroft. Arguably the real jewel in the crown of Dublin Castle is the Chester Beatty Library which houses a priceless collection of ancient manuscripts and books from Europe and the Far East. Admission is completely free and can be enjoyed separately from the main castle tour.
Dublin Castle – A cultural adventure into the past
During summer short breaks in Dublin, you may be lucky enough to savour one of the occasional open air concerts that take place in its grounds. You can learn a little about Celtic ancestry and Irish cultural history at the Dublin Heritage Centre or simply explore the attractive enclosed landscaped gardens and contemplate all this magical history. Before heading elsewhere, treat yourself to some refreshments in the charming tea rooms and browse for quality souvenirs in the castle gift store.
