Edinburgh Castle – A Millennium of Fascinating History
Edinburgh’s medieval castle sits on top of the volcanic Castle Rock and dominates the city skyline from every angle. It is Scotland’s most visited landmark and a definite must during any Edinburgh city break. It exudes over 1,000 years of history and there is much to explore, so allow for a whole afternoon to take it all in. Comprehensive tours of the castle are conducted daily which will visit the 16th century Great Hall, the Scottish Crown Jewels, the famous One o'clock Gun and see the Stone of Destiny which is reputed to date back to biblical times.

Other highlights include the medieval St Margaret's Chapel and the Royal Palace apartments which were home for monarchs such as Mary Queen of Scots and James I. Edinburgh Castle houses a number of museums and permanent exhibitions such as the National War Museum of Scotland, The Royal Scots Regimental Museum, Prisons of War Exhibition and Scottish National War Memorial. Military history buffs are certainly in for a treat. Even more so during a summer short break in Edinburgh for the famous Military Tattoo held on the esplanade, an incredible spectacle of derring do, fireworks and colourful parades of the pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments.
Edinburgh Castle – Captivating Family Days Out
Centuries of turbulent royal history come alive at Edinburgh Castle making for a captivating day out for curious youngsters. There are reenactments and mock battles, weapon displays and marching bands to enjoy. Kids can embark on a ‘children’s trail’ treasure hunt through the castle grounds accompanied by guides in full medieval regalia. There are also regular gala events held in the Great Hall, especially at Christmas and Hogmonay. An Edinburgh weekend break would not be complete without taking in the glorious views from Castle Rock, which look out over the city’s historic Georgian rooftops and as far as the mountains of Fife to the north.
