A great ethical city break can be had by staying closer to home. There are a number of great UK city break destinations that are well worth a visit. You can visit intriguing historical cities like Manchester, Edinburgh and London by train, thus reducing your carbon footprint, and enjoying some of Europe's most interesting and diverse weekend breaks. Edinburgh is a particularly great destination for lovers of city life, spectacular historical views and proximity to the countryside. You can walk up the famous Arthur's Seat and enjoy the views over the Old City, as well as unbroken views to the sea. Or, if you want something a little more intellectual, you can follow the writer's trail and find the houses of famous literary sons of Scotland like Robert Burns, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson.

 

For nearly two centuries, people have embraced the romance of the train journey, and if you want a lower carbon footprint on your short break holiday then try using this oft, but incorrectly, maligned form of transport. Eurostar rail links take you into the heart of Europe connecting you to cities like Cologne, Brussels and Paris, and a whole host more if you change at the major train hubs. Once you've arrived at your destination use more carbon free methods of transport, many cities come alive when you walk through them and there are many sight's you'll only be able to see once you abandon the petrol guzzlers and make your way on foot.
