There are some destinations in Europe that shout sophistication from their high cathedrals, citadels and domed roofs. Destinations like Venice, Athens or Bruges are famous as much for their buildings as they are for their wonderful food and elegant restaurants. As a result, destinations like these are high on many tourists’ list of top destinations to visit. Trying to avoid paying a premium on destinations like these is a challenge. However if you can, then you may experience that a city break in one of Europe's top destinations need not break the bank.

If you are determined to see Paris in the peak of the summer, then you will need to make sure you book well in advance and pay for everything up front. Great city break deals are out there, particularly if you can find a good package deal, so don't be put off if you think Paris is out of reach. However, if you aren't afraid to visit a destination like Cologne or Valencia away from the peak of the summer, you will find better deals on your European short break by travelling in spring and autumn. At these times of year you can still get great weather, and with the cities a little calmer, waiting times at many of the more popular attractions are much reduced. Even try booking last minute city breaks; you may find a deal to a top destination is very much affordable if you don't mind taking the risk of travelling to a different destination than you had planned.

Destinations like Tallinn in Estonia, or Istanbul in Turkey, are great European destinations for a cheap city break. They have a wealth of tradition, culture and character which are attractive and affordable. Be the first of your friends to go and you will be able to let the world know about the wonders to be found. Istanbul, with its friendly locals and excellent mix of Eastern and Western cuisines is a connoisseurs dream. Not to mention the spectacular mix of Islamic and ancient Christian art and architecture.
