Frankfurt City Breaks - A rich history
Unravel years of history during a city break in Frankfurt. The city’s name derives from the Franks, a Germanic tribe whose leader Charlemagne lived in Frankfurt. Frankfurt has been established as a trading centre since the Roman times. Most of Frankfurt’s visitors come for one of the numerous trade fairs and exhibitions. One of the largest on the international circuit is the International Book Fair (Burchmesse Frankfurt). Almost named the country's capital on numerous occasions, Frankfurt is the financial and transportation centre of the nation and is home the European Central Bank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. This city has another side to it other than business, with excellent museums, high, calibre performance groups and local festivals. Although Frankfurt was severely bombed in World War II the city decided to look forward, not back, architecturally, and the result is a stunning skyline which includes nine of the ten tallest buildings in Germany.
