Giardini Pubblici (Milan)

Giardini Pubblici – A peaceful escape from the bustle of city life
Translated simply as the ‘Public Gardens,’ the Giardini Pubblici is the main central green lung of the city and provides the perfect refuge from the dizzying pace of modern Milanese life. Measuring over 40 acres of beautifully manicured flower gardens, lawns and ponds, it is styled in the classical English style and created in 1786 by the famous architect Guiseppe Piermarini, who was also responsible for La Scala Opera House and the Royal Palace. It has a very naturalistic quality complete with waterfalls and rocky outcrops and visitors on cheap city breaks in Milan can really kick back and escape the crowds in this tranquil oasis.

Giardini Pubblici – Filled with captivating art, science and history
There are several small lakes surrounded by countless statues in classical Romanesque and modern styles and the gardens are also home to the attractive 18th century Palazzo Dugnale, which now houses the Milan Natural Science Centre. Art lovers on short breaks in Milan can view some fabulous modern art at the Galleria D’Arte Moderna, which showcases works by Mondrian, Matisse and Picasso. This was also once the home of Napoleon Bonaparte when Milan was the Italian capital of the Napoleonic Empire. The adjacent Padiglione D’Arte Contemporanea offers contemporary exhibitions of modern photography and paintings from local artists.

Giardini Pubblici – A great place for kids to run wild
There is yet more to see and do, especially for young families at the Giardini Pubblici. The city’s art deco designed planetarium is located here and the simple pleasures of a small funfair complete with bumper cars, carousels and a kiddies train will enchant the little ones. On energetic weekend breaks in Milan, you can indulge in bicycle rides, an impromptu game of football or even bungee swings. The Giardini Pubblici is a perfect place for a summer’s day picnic, but there are also a couple of outdoor cafes serving up simple pasta dishes, snacks, coffee and ice cream.
