Glasgow Weather

Glasgow weather - Forget the stereotypes!
The city is on the same latitude as Moscow but, because it is close to the warm Atlantic Ocean shores and lies in the path of a prevailing westerly wind, it has a significantly more moderate climate. Glasgow (and the west of Scotland) skies tend to be cloudier than the rest of the country but the temperature is not affected as the city is sheltered by the surrounding Clyde Valley hills. The Gulf Stream currents flow up the Clyde estuary from the Atlantic warming the entire region. In general, the temperature in Glasgow is around the same as that in northern England. Glasgow, in fact, enjoys a very stable climate with quite warm summers and mild winters.

Weather in Glasgow - Pack your shorts!
The spring months are mild and cool and many of Glasgow’s trees and plants begin to flower at this time of the year; parks and gardens are filled with seasonal colours. The summers are often long, warm, calm and sunny, but can vary considerably. The winds are generally westerly, due to the warm Gulf Stream, and the warmest month is usually July when the average day temperature reaches 20C. Most days start off misty but warm up to sunny, mild afternoons. In Scotland the weather is likely to change from a rain storm to a heat wave in the same day!

Glasgow winter weather - Grey but not bleak!
Winters are long and wet, with cold winds and some snow. Despite some infrequent clear or dry days, winter city breaks in Glasgow are normally damp and cold. Winds and rainfall are often fairly chilling and strong, like the rest of the region. Severe snowfalls are infrequent and melt within days. December, January and February are the wettest months of the year, but can often be sunny and clear. If your short weekend break falls in the winter months, don’t forget to pack warm clothing.
