Golden Lane (Prague)

Golden Lane – An enchanting medieval passageway
Named due to the many medieval goldsmiths who originally resided and traded here, Golden Lane is an enchanting cobbled lane tucked away among the fortifications of Prague Castle. It is a short stretch which exudes a fairy tale quality filled with colourful pastel shaded cottages, each one telling its own famous story. Fully restored after the Second World War, most buildings still boast their original facade and period features inside, and it is one of the most popular photo opportunities on cheap city breaks in Prague. Known locally as Zlatnicka ulicka, nowadays there are just a dozen houses remaining, many of which have been converted into craft shops, antique book stores and artist’s workshops.
Golden Lane - Delightful place to browse for gifts
Without doubt, the most popular address is number 22, where seminal writer Franz Kafka lived for a short time and produced some of his most famous work. The dwellings are actually built into the arches of the castle walls and all are open to the public as tourist orientated businesses or quaint historic exhibits. Golden Lane is as good a place as any to browse for charming souvenirs and authentic gifts during short breaks in Prague. Despite its popularity as a tourist haunt, prices are pretty good value compared to other areas in the city.
Golden Lane – Located in the shadow of imposing Prague Castle
Golden Lane is enclosed within the city’s fortified ramparts and is only accessible once you have paid for admission into the main Prague Castle complex. Although there is so much to explore here, save some time to stroll along Golden Lane and soak up its timeless atmosphere. Gaze at houses that seem so tiny, only hobbits could possibly reside here. While on Prague weekend breaks, you can also spend a captivating hour or so in the medieval museum and armoury situated at the end of the lane.
