Grand Place (Brussels)

Grand-Place – The most beautiful square in Europe
The Grand-Place is universally acknowledged as Europe’s finest market square and a thoroughly deserved UNESCO World Heritage site. It is without doubt the most memorable landmark in Brussels and has its origins dating back to the 13th century. On every side it is surrounded by formidable guild houses, beautifully preserved from the late 17th century, topped off by the imposing Town Hall and historic Kings House. Visitors flock to the Grand-Place during weekend breaks in Brussels not only to admire its fabulous architecture but also to soak up its vibrant atmosphere. It is the focus for major celebrations such as the colourful Ommegang procession and where locals like to spend time at leisure.

Grand-Place – Soak up a chilled out cafe culture
Visitors can explore the stunning gothic Town Hall building or choose to concentrate on the social and cultural aspects of weekends in Brussels. Sitting in one of the myriad pavement cafes with a strong Belgian beer is the quintessential thing to do in the Grand-Place, which has a delightfully low key ambience most of the time. Return in the evening again and witness a romantic scene of twinkling white and gold street lamps beautifully illuminating these historic merchant houses.

Grand-Place – Spectacular seasonal events
The spectacle of the famous ‘Flower Carpet’ is an occasion not to be missed at the Grand-Place. Every two years during August, the square is covered with over one million begonias, sculpted into beautiful floral tapestries. The picture is completed with inspiring nightly shows of music and light. For the very best views and a glorious photo opportunity, head to the Town Hall balcony. An even greater spectacle is the historic Christmas market and funfair, complete with mammoth Ferris wheel. The Grand-Place is transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland that will cast a magical spell over young kids.
