Heroes' Square (Budapest)

Heroes' Square – The focus of national pride and identity
Heroes' Square is a large and impressive city square that is testament to Hungarian national pride and freedom. Located between the elegant boulevard of Andrassy Avenue and City Park, it is the focus of political and social life and one of the city’s most popular landmarks. At its heart is the colonnaded Millenium Monument which was built in 1896 to celebrate 1,000 years of the Hungarian nation. It features graceful statues and reliefs depicting the conquests of famous Hungarian figures through history. On cheap city breaks in Budapest, you can also admire an imposing Corinthian column and cenotaph which are full of extravagant symbolism.

Heroes’ Square – Prestigious art venues
At either end of the square you will find the two finest art galleries in the city. These are the Museum of Fine Arts, which boasts the world's second largest collection of Spanish art and the contemporary Art Hall. Both are well worth visiting for art lovers on short breaks in Budapest, although you could easily spend a whole day in wonder at the captivating exhibits. Walking around Heroes’ Square is a relaxing way to enjoy an afternoon, but you may have to dodge the ever present teenagers whizzing around on skateboards. There are lovely turn of the century pavement cafes ideal for a spot of lunch and views of contemporary Magyar life.

Heroes’ Square – A rewarding family day out
Heroes’ Square makes the perfect starting point for a day of sightseeing or some adventurous fun and games on a Budapest city break. Conveniently close, City Park will have youngsters in rapture, featuring the city’s famous zoo, boating, ice skating and funfair rides. In the opposite direction is elegant tree lined Andrassy Avenue. Admire the magnificent renaissance mansions and the historic concert halls of the State Opera and Institute of Ballet.
