Hong Kong Weather

Hong Kong's location is just within the tropics giving it a mild monsoon climate which can result in extremely heavy rainfall and high humidity and is very similar to the climate throughout Southern China. It is made up of several often sheltered offshore islands and the southernmost part of mainland China which can produce some variable conditions throughout the year. Weather in Hong Kong is rarely chilly, even after dark and snow and frost is virtually unheard of. Although warm for much of the year, which can become extremely hot during summertime, Hong Kong may see many overcast, cloudy days with just a few hours of daily sunshine.

 

Summer weather in Hong Kong is generally hot and sunny, although this is when the rainy season occurs and between May and late September precipitation can be heavy. Humidity can be a major factor at this time and in the densely populated Kowloon and Central areas it can feel extremely sultry and oppressive. There is some relief at night with lower temperatures and evenings out will feel rather pleasant. July and August can see typhoons moving north off the South China Sea which can bring heavy rain and wind, yet Hong Kong's location shelters itself from the very worst effects of this. Daytime temperatures during summer months are around 28c with up to 8 hours of daily sunshine.  

Hong Kong enjoys very mild and pleasant winters with uncomfortably cold weather almost nonexistent. For many people, the best time to visit is between October and February when it is generally warm and dry with an average of 6 hours of sunshine each day. Daytime temperatures can reach 24c and this time of year. March and April are much more variable and can see plenty of cloudy skies yet remains dry for the most part with only occasional showers. Humidity is much less severe at this time and evenings are still mild and comfortable.
