Imperial Palace – A monumental royal palace
The Vienna Imperial Palace, officially known as the Hofburg, is one of the most imposing buildings of its kind in Europe, and was the seat of power for the all-conquering Habsberg Dynasty for over six centuries. It is now the official residence for the Austrian President and the most popular tourist attraction on cheap city breaks in Vienna. Over the centuries, the original medieval castle fortress has been extended and remodelled by a succession of monarchs to produce a magnificent palace filled with a fabulous array of art and history. The place is unashamedly lavish and huge and the statistics speak for themselves. It has 18 wings compromising 2,600 rooms in total and even today over 5,000 people live and work in the palace.
Imperial Palace – A fabulous collection of art treasures
The Imperial Palace is likely to be the most captivating experience on short breaks in Vienna. There are six art and history museums, the national library, a quintessentially regal Throne Room, several wings of state apartments, ceremonial halls and a concert hall. Long weekends in Vienna really must get to the gothic Imperial Chapel for Sunday Mass and the unmissable experience of the iconic Vienna Boys' Choir in full voice. At every turn you will be rewarded with the sight of exquisite renaissance murals, priceless artwork and elegant regency furnishings. It is virtually impossible to take it all in during one visit, but a guided tour will see all the major highlights and even allow you to sit on the Emperor's throne.
Imperial Palace – The enduring magic of the Spanish riding school
The palace is surrounded by delightful ornamental grounds and beautifully designed rose gardens and water features. There is even an exotic butterfly house in an exquisite art deco glass pavilion. The most popular single feature of the Hofburg Imperial Palace is undoubtedly the Winter Riding School, home to the graceful Lipizzaner stallions of the famous Spanish Riding School. This is sure to captivate young and old and best enjoyed as a separate visit on a Vienna city break as you will certainly be in no hurry to leave.
