Istanbul Weather - Short break weather
The city of Istanbul has a temperate-continental climate, with hot and humid summers; and cold, rainy and often snowy winters. Humidity is generally high which can make temperatures feel much warmer, or colder. The prevailing northeast wind, or poyraz, comes from the Black Sea making the city quite windy with an average speed of 17 km/h (11 mph). Yearly precipitation averages at 870 mm.

Weather in Istanbul - Sizzling summer
The summer months between June and September bring average daytime temperatures of 28C and are generally hot and humid. July is ideal for a city break in Istanbul, being the warmest month with an average temperature of 23.3C and summer is by far the driest season. The weather becomes slightly cooler towards the east of the city.

Istanbul Winter Weather - Sometimes there’s snow!
The coldest time to visit Istanbul is in January with average temperatures of 5.6C. The city’s climate is characterised by winter temperatures cold enough to support a fixed period of stable snow cover each year. The most likely time to catch an Istanbul snowfall is between the months of December and March. Icy blasts from the Balkans known as the karayel, or “black veil,” are capable of freezing the Golden Horn and even the Bosporus. The lodos, or southwest wind, can raise storms on the Sea of Marmara. Despite the possibility of snow, the city will not feel particularly cold as temperatures rarely drop as low as freezing point.
