Kazimierz (Krakow)

Kazimierz – Full of evocative history
Kazimierz has been a thriving Jewish Quarter since the early 16th century, situated on the doorstep of Krakow's old town. Nowadays, it is the most vibrant area of the city, contributing to Krakow's remarkable success as a tourist destination. Since medieval times, it has been a bustling centre of Jewish life and culture and retains much of its captivating early architecture, despite the dark days of Nazi occupation during the Second World War. Cheap city breaks in Krakow are often focused on this small historic town, due to the impact of the film 'Schindler's List' which was set here. Evocative history and modern day renaissance make for a compelling experience.

Kazimierz – Captivating gothic synagogues and churches
There are six imposing Synagogues in Kazimierz's Jewish Quarter, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. These include the Gothic style Remu Synagogue and the neo renaissance Tempel Synagogue. All rub shoulders with Christian sites such as the baroque style Church of St. Michael the Archangel and the gothic Corpus Christi Church. The town centre is at Main Square which is dominated by the old City Hall, now housing the Ethnographic Museum. On cultural city breaks in Krakow, you may easily get lost in its maze of winding, historic streets. This is part of the experience, as there are so many hidden gems to discover. The Museum of Judaism is worth a visit, or you can spend a couple of hours exploring the evocative Remuh cemetery, filled with hundreds of medieval tombstones.

Kazimierz – A vibrant nightlife quarter
Modern day Kazimierz is awash with trendy shopping, restaurants and bars and has become the most vibrant night time haunt among Krakow's large student population. There is more than enough to keep even the most energetic party animal occupied, while gastronomic delights can be had in the many chic eateries that are popping up. Krakow long weekend breaks will find a lively and sociable atmosphere after dark, made even more special with beautifully illuminated streets and squares.
