Magic Fountain (Barcelona)

Situated on the hill at Montjuic, the Magic Fountain is one of the most enchanting attractions in Barcelona and a great way to spend a relaxing evening with the family. Its name pretty much sums it up. It is a monumental series of fountains comprised of over 3,000 water jets which provide a spectacular display of colour, light and water to the sounds of classical and pop music. Shows are held in the evenings between Thursday and Sunday and are especially popular as the sun sets. It makes for a rewarding excursion before dinner on a city break in Barcelona, and best of all, it is completely free.

 

The Magic Fountain was first conceived in 1929 as the centrepiece to the Universal Exhibition and has been delighting people ever since. It is situated by the Palau National, providing a suitably grand backdrop and its winding staircases afford the perfect vantage point. Plenty of small cafes are situated around it to re-fresh and re-charge; why not sip a sundowner whilst watching the spectacle? Those on weekend breaks in Barcelona should claim a strategic spot early, as many similar-minded holidaymakers will make this their balmy summer evening destination.     

 

Shows are relatively short, with displays of just 15 minutes each, but they more than make up for this with their grandiose and young kids will find it enchanting.
