Synonymous with art the world over, many national treasures reside in Milan. The Pinacoteca Brera, Milan’s best art collection, covers 700 years of Italian art and includes Raphael’s Marriage of the Virgin, Piero della Francesca’s Brera Altarpiece, and works by Titian, Canaletto and Caravaggio. Further art is on view at the Castello Sforzesco; the Rondanini Pietà by Michelangelo and works by Mantegna, Bellotto and Canaletto. Named after Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana is a historical library that houses drawings and notebooks by Leonardo da Vinci in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana art gallery.

Churches
There’s one thing you must do during your short break in this beautiful city; visit some of the stunning places of worship. The breathtaking Duomo is the city’s cathedral. Some 3,500 statues adorn the building, an amazing example of Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1386 and was completed in 1805 because Napoleon wanted to be crowned King of Italy.

Shopping
Milan’s boutiques and shops rival the best on the planet. Amble through Vias Montenapoleone, della Spiga, Sant’Andrea and Manzoni and discover every designer label under the sun from Armani, Bally and Dolce & Gabbana to Prada, Valentino and Versace. There are hundreds more too, to suit every taste. Discover up-and-coming designers on corso di Porta Ticinese or, for outlet buying, try D-Magazine or Salvagente.

Opera
A weekend break to Milan is not complete without a visit to the opera. Marvel at beautiful works from renowned composers such Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi at the famous La Scala.
