Montreal Weather

Montreal has a climate strongly influenced by its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This gives it relatively changeable weather through the seasons. In general Montreal weather is typical of Canada with hot summers and cold, often sub zero winters. In fact it has one of the widest temperature ranges in the world for a major city. However Montreal summers are among the finest in Canada due to its southerly location close to the US border. Spring and summer enjoy quite stable temperatures and plenty of bright sunshine until November when they fall sharply. Winter weather in Montreal is certain to see copious snowfall especially between December and February and days will feel bitterly cold.

 

 

Summer temperatures can reach as high as 30c during July although around 26c should be considered the norm. Up to 9 hours of sun can be enjoyed daily at this time. Summer days are characterised by bright sunshine and clear skies although heavy brief showers are common. Coming into September, temperatures fall marginally and long periods of late summer sunshine should be enjoyed. Fine weather in Montreal may well continue well into autumn and for the majority of visitors this is the best time to visit. Rainfall is generally light and the countryside is resplendent in rich colour however winds can be blustery.

 

 

Montreal has a whole new outlook during winter with guaranteed snowfall for several months. There is sufficient snow covering for cross country skiing in its city parks and commuting by snowmobile is a common sight. While city break in Montreal has a romantic ambience at this time, it can be extremely cold with temperatures well below freezing. There is often a strong chill factor and visitors should plan accordingly with plenty of thick clothing. Temperatures in January are likely to be as low as -8c with perhaps 3 hours of sunshine. This is the time for the heaviest snowfall and due to the freezing air, rainfall is rare. Spring weather in Montreal can occasionally experience isolated snow flurries as late as April.
