Munich Weather
Munich weather - Be prepared for all sorts!
Munich lies on the elevated plains of upper Bavaria, some 30 miles from the northern edge of the Alps, at an altitude of about 520m. It has a modified continental climate and the mountains cause two unique aberrations in the weather. South-westerly winds crossing the area can bring warm Föhn conditions – during any season but only on a few days a year – pushing up temperatures even in winter. North-westerly winds from the Alps cause conditions known as Alpenstau, most often in spring and summer, which bring unseasonably low temperatures, rain and even snow on odd days. Temperatures throughout the year are reduced relative to lower-lying parts of Germany due to the altitude.
Weather in Munich - The Föhn affect
Summers are fairly warm – with frequent thunder – and generally wet. The average temperature in the hottest month, July, is 19C. The summers last from May until September and it can reach 35C with the aid of Föhn support. The strong Föhn conditions only affect Munich for a few days per year and are a less significant factor in the local climate than is popularly believed. It is very rare in mid-summer. Rainfall amounts increase sharply towards the south in the direction of the Alps and mean amounts are measurably higher in the south of the city than in the north!
Munich winter weather - There could be a nip in the air!
Winters are cold with a January mean of 0.5 C. Heavy snowfall is rare, especially in recent years, but cover is seen for at least a couple of weeks. Fog may occur in autumn and winter, but is less frequent in the city itself. In regards to weather – when taking a Munich city break – expect the unexpected and pack an umbrella and rain jacket!
