Notre Dame du Sablon (Brussels)

Notre Dame du Sablon – A Stately Gothic Landmark
Located in the well-to-do district of The Sablon, noted for its elegant antiques stores and chocolatiers, is the imposing Gothic church of Notre Dame du Sablon. It dominates the graceful Place du Grand-Sablon, and has a stature and appearance very much like London's Westminster Abbey. It is a flamboyant Brambantine Gothic church, noted for its huge stained glass windows which delightfully illuminate the central nave and two decorative chapels adorned with funeral symbols in white marble. On cheap city breaks in Brussels, you are sure to find this the most attractive church in the city, and one that has changed very little since its construction in the 15th century.

Notre Dame du Sablon -   Captivating Traditions and Heritage
An attractive statue of the Virgin Mary takes pride of place in the church and as is the custom during medieval times, was reputed to have miraculous healing powers. This helped to transform a then smallish chapel into the gothic masterpiece we see today. Notre Dame du Sablon is also the traditional place for the famous annual Ommegang procession, a definite must see during short breaks in Brussels, and one of the city's most colourful events.

Notre Dame du Sablon – Elegant Shopping and Sightseeing
Even a very detailed visit of the church and its picturesque grounds will leave plenty of time to explore the immediate area. The Sablon district is a real delight for antique hunters and you can rummage to your heart’s content during weekends in Brussels, where you will find dozens of antique and book sellers and the famous weekend flea market. There is simply no finer place to shop, especially with the spectacular backdrop such as the Notre Dame du Sablon for company.
