Old Town Square (Prague)

Situated between Wenceslas Square and the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square has been the focus of central Prague life for over 700 years. It features various architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque influences and is often bursting at the seams with tourists during busy summer months. It is one of Europe's most attractive city squares and is surrounded on all sides by towering church spires and imposing Town Hall buildings. Weekend breaks in Prague can see you chill out in one of the many quaint pavement cafes, simply soak up centuries of tumultuous history or view some of the most endearing architecture in central Europe.

There is an incredible amount of history to explore here, and a whole afternoon may just about do it justice. It features the city's two most dramatic churches which are the gothic Tyn Church and the strikingly white St. Nicholas church. The latter is the city's most impressive venue for classical concerts. During short breaks in Prague, you should definitely return after dark to witness both lit up against the night sky in a blaze of colour. Perhaps the most unique landmark in the square is the fanciful Astronomical Clock which has stood here since the 15th century. It is a lovely photogenic sight adorned with astrological decorations and a whimsical mechanism which tolls magically on the hour day and night.

 

Despite its age and enduring popularity, Old Town Square is still a hive of commercial activity and hosts Prague's famous Christmas markets, New Year street parties and has also been the scene of wild celebration, revolution and unrest down the centuries. This is where locals like to spend leisure time simply sipping a coffee or strolling with the family.
