Palais de la Bahia – A brilliant day out for art and history lovers
The Bahia Palace is one of the most visually arresting landmarks in central Marrakech and a must visit on any historic itinerary during Morocco cheap city breaks. Translated as ‘Palace of Brilliance’ it is an apt name and it superbly captures the essence of 19th century Islamic architecture and artistic style. It is located in the old Medina and surrounded by eight hectares of majestic ornamental gardens affording a tranquil oasis from the usual hectic pace of life. Of particular note is the exterior stucco stonework awash with intricate geometric designs and colourful mosaics typical of the period.
Palais De La Bahia – A monumental royal palace
This monumental 150 room palace includes an elaborate mosque, hammam bath house, a series of tiled courtyards, lavish reception rooms and a harem built for the Sultan’s wives and concubines. Some of its interior furnishings are a little over indulgent for modern tastes but it gives a vivid impression of the privileged lifestyle of the rich at this time. On Marrakech short breaks, you can explore the rambling private apartments of the Sultan’s favourite concubine, the ornate council chamber with its tiled walls and beautifully carved wooden ceiling and throughout the grand central courtyard, featuring marble tiling and some elaborate stone fountains.
Palais de la Bahia – Ornate and alluring architectural design
Leading off the main courtyards are a series of tiny secret corridors and passageways leading to private living quarters and it is quite easy to lose your bearings. Guided tours will solve this and will also give a telling insight into life in the royal court and point out the many intricacies of design, particular the beautiful ceiling paintings, carved doorway arches and tiling which took over 15 years to complete. Marrakech weekend breaks should not miss out a visit to the Tombeaux Saadiens either, a beautifully preserved mausoleum built for later Sultan Ahmed el Mansour.
