Prague Palace – Unique mix of timeless architecture
Known officially as the Old Royal Palace, this was the historic seat of a succession of Bohemian princes since its founding in the 9th century. It forms part of the huge Prague castle complex, and alone is worthy of a few hours to explore its labyrinthine state rooms and elegant banqueting halls. It has undergone several reconstructions over the ensuing centuries, and highlights a compelling mix of gothic, Romanesque and renaissance design. The interiors exude timeless royal history with opulent furnishing and priceless art in situ. This is the perfect Prague city break visit for ardent history lovers and an enlightening journey through the ages that even younger children will find captivating.
Prague Palace – Spectacular Vladislav Hall
The most impressive feature of the palace is the late-Gothic style Vladislav Hall. This was the place for the coronation of kings and was even cavernous enough to hold jousting tournaments. The famous Rider´s Staircase made it possible for knights to enter on horseback in full battle regalia. It is still used today for state ceremonies and for presidential elections. Looking out of the south window will be rewarded with some of the best city views possible on short breaks in Prague.
Prague Palace- Grand halls and lavish state rooms
There is yet more to discover here on cheap city breaks in Prague. There are two Bohemian chancellery rooms, lavish state apartments, the gothic Old Assembly Hall and the renaissance Imperial Court Council, which has an abundance of tumultuous history attached to it. One more definite must see is the attached All Saints' Church, which houses the tomb of St. Procopius, whose life is portrayed in a series of colourful wall paintings. Guided tours are available each day, or you can just pick your way through the maze of courtyards and corridors. A visit is perfectly combined with the sumptuous state rooms of the adjacent New Royal Palace, which boast fine collections of regency furniture and fine art.
