Puerta del Sol – The Heart of the Old City
Deriving its name as one of the original gates in the old fortified city wall, the plaza of Puerta del Sol is located in the very heart of Madrid and is one of its busiest meeting points. In fact it can claim to be the centre of the Spanish nation. In the heart of the plaza is the famous ‘0 kilometre’ marker from which all major Spanish highways originate. Semi circular in shape, Puerta del Sol is a major transport hub and short breaks in Madrid can use it as a good base for sightseeing, being convenient for strolling to attractions such as the Prado Museum, Plaza Mayor and Retiro Park.
Puerta del Sol – Intriguing Historic Landmarks
Puerto del Sol is a functional plaza that doesn’t quite have the grandeur of historic Plaza Mayor but has a couple of interesting sights worth exploring. The most impressive structure is the 18th century Old Post Office which features a famous clock tower. This is where thousands of partygoers congregate each New Year’s Eve in Madrid awaiting the chimes of midnight. There is also a whimsical statue that takes pride of place here, known as ‘the bear and the strawberry tree’ which is actually Madrid’s official symbol although its origins are shrouded in mystery.
Puerta del Sol – A Vibrant nightlife Scene
Puerto del Sol really comes into its own after dark and is the city’s foremost entertainment district. It glimmers with arty neon lit signs and its radiating side streets are where you will find the all the hottest clubs, bars and cafes in town. These very same streets are a Mecca for bargain hunters during the day. Shopping city breaks in Madrid can explore the fabulous department stores of nearby Calle Preciados or the charming antique and craft sellers of Calle de Alcalá.
