Rialto Bridge (Venice)

Rialto Bridge – One of Europe’s most magical bridges
The Rialto Bridge has been at the centre of Venetian life since its construction at the end of the 16th century. It was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time and a far grander sight than the more iconic Bridge of Sighs. Connecting the historic Rialto Markets along the banks of the Grand Canal, this photographer’s dream features a unique stone construction of two inclined ramps covered by a portico. A vaporetto or gondola ride along the canal will immediately recognise its unmistakable design that seems to engulf the water from every angle. It is one of the chief tourist attractions during short breaks in Venice, and attracts a never ending flow of awe struck sightseers.

Rialto Bridge – Wonderfully evocative canal views
The bridge has a surprisingly broad central walkway, filled on either side by rows of cramped shops selling typical tourist souvenirs and Venetian gifts such as lace, leather and glassware. It has an animated atmosphere that can get completely swamped during summer weekend breaks in Venice. You can escape this frenetic commercial activity by walking along the two outer balustrades of the Rialto Bridge and gaze longingly along the majestic Grand Canal. It is the perfect vantage point to soak all up the history and romance of its unmistakable waterfront architecture.

Rialto Bridge – A colourful shopping experience
A visit is most rewarding in the early light of morning when the adjacent Rialto markets are brimming with feverish activity. It is one of Europe’s most historic and colourful marketplaces and for many people is the best free show in town. You can browse a warren of stalls crammed to the rafters with fresh seafood, exotic vegetables and fresh herbs and there are a plethora of unforgettable photo opportunities. A walk across the Rialto Bridge during cheap city breaks in Venice involves a rather arduous scramble over a series of uneven stone steps and not really suitable for wheelchair users.
