Rome Things To Do
Squares & Fountains
Strolling to Rome’s emblematic squares and fountains is a superb way of discovering the city. Rome’s squares are cosmopolitan meeting points for tourists and residents alike. Highlights include the Piazza di Trevi with its magnificent iconic Fontana di Trevi and the simply stunning Piazza Navona, a Baroque masterpiece with three wonderful fountains. Other symbolic squares include Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna with the Spanish Steps.
Food Coffee & Ice Cream
Popping into Rome cafes is an essential part of any Rome city break. Do as the Romans do and sample various styles of coffee and tempting cakes and snacks. Rome has fantastic ice cream parlours. Some of the most memorable eating experiences are in the most basic-looking places with the simplest paper menu: great pasta and an economical carafe of house wine. Rome is a superb city for vegetarians. There are still plenty of charming family restaurants in the heart of the city. Again, follow the locals.
Art in situ
Rome churches provide art lovers with an unparalleled opportunity to see amazing works in their original setting. Caravaggio in San Luigi dei Francesi, Raphael's frescoes in Santa Maria della Pace, the immense riches of Santa Maria del Popolo, Michelangelo's Tomb of Pope Julius II in San Pietro Vincoli and of course the Renaissance treasures of St. Peter's, culminating in Michelangelo's dome and Pieta sculpture. Rome’s palaces would be worth exploring even without the art treasures they contain. Palazzo Barberini has paintings by Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, and Bernini; Palazzo Doria Pamphili has a superb Renaissance collection; the 19th century baroque Palazzo Massimo alle Terme has antiquities from the Museo Nazionale Romano; there is also an extraordinary collection of classical antiquities in the 16th-century Palazzo Altemps.
Shopping
Shopping in Rome is one of the few things that might distract you from the monuments, churches, palaces, fountains, cafes and fine food! In the very heart of the Centro Storico you will find plenty of fascinating small grocery stores, tremendous Italian interior design, some incredible shoe shops and all of the big names in high fashion.
Parks
Rome parks are a welcome respite from the monuments and the tourists, and provide some of the best views of the city. Palatine Hill surrounds the ruins of the original city and is a delightful retreat from the traffic. Villa Borghese is a famous public park with fine trees, statues, an amphitheatre and an aviary. The fine formal gardens of Aventine Hill, with their orange trees and roses, provide a beautiful setting for superb churches. Also try Camp Verano cemetery and the Jewish cemetery, the Belvedere di Monte Tarpeio near the Forum and Villa Doria Pamphilj, Rome’s largest park.
