Saint Giles Cathedral (Edinburgh)

 

The High Kirk of Edinburgh, commonly known as Saint Giles Cathedral, is one of the most imposing sights along the Royal Mile. It has stood there for over 900 years and still retains some of its original early medieval features. There is much to explore and the most impressive feature is the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle. It contains beautifully carved stalls for knights by royal appointment, two ornate Royal stalls and some wonderfully unique stone reliefs such as those of angels playing bagpipes. It is a popular Edinburgh short break attraction and still a fully functioning parish church where all are welcome.

 

 

Despite its large size it retains a unique charm due to its curious floor plan and the sheer number of monuments and statues. Famous names honoured with statues in the church include John Knox and Robert Louis Stevenson. Dominating the west wing is the Burns Window – a modern monumental stained glass window depicting a fantasy world through the poetry of Robert Burns. Other highlights to look out for on a weekend in Edinburgh here include the famous Rieger organ and the highly decorative Albany and Moray Aisles.

 

 

Saint Giles was officially only a cathedral for two brief periods during the 17th century and is in fact a Presbyterian church. It has a healthy congregation with daily church services that are open to all visitors. In addition you can enjoy a whole range of performances throughout the year. These include lunchtime weekend recitals, carol singing and classical music. The church choir is also highly regarded and has toured throughout the UK and Europe.
