Salzburg Weather

With an elevated and sheltered position in the mountainous north of Austria, Salzburg weather is heavily influenced by Alpine climatic conditions. This sees mild summers which are surprisingly dry and very cold winter months with abundant snowfall. The overall climate is generally considered to be continental and has a relatively settled pattern of sunshine, rain and snow through the seasons. Summer months are idyllic with cool mountain air and lowland meadows filled with wild alpine flowers and fragrant pine forests. Short breaks in Salzburg are especially popular at this time with nature lovers and hikers. Wintertime will see a thick blanket of snow for several months and a romantic landscape of icy lakes and snow capped mountain peaks.

 

Salzburg is a year round destination that offers access to thrilling mountain sports and skiing in winter and stunning Alpine nature trails during its mild spring and summer. From April onwards, the city and most of the countryside has thawed to reveal a stunning landscape filled with rolling green meadows and wildflowers. Temperatures average at around 20c during July with a very commendable 7 hours of daily sunshine. The city of Salzburg itself is located in a protected valley which produces a prodigious amount of cloud cover during summer. Thunderstorms are not uncommon in June and July which can be sudden and heavy and reduce visibility markedly, although this tends to be brief. Normal rainfall is likely at any time of the year and is generally heavier in early spring and autumn.

 

Weather in Salzburg - A romantic wintery wonderland 

There is no doubting the romantic appeal of snowbound Salzburg in winter which is a major attraction for visitors. However daytime temperatures can dip below freezing and remain low for long periods of time especially in December and January. Salzburg weather sees very chilly nights with early morning ice on pavements and roads. The city copes extremely well with these severe wintery conditions and very rarely does Salzburg weather seriously affect transport and the enjoyment of a city break. Between December and March there is constant snow cover which is at its heaviest in January. Temperatures hover around freezing point with occasionally cold snaps seeing the mercury plunge to around -7c for short periods. Sunshine is limited at this time ranging from 2 hours a day in January, to up to 5 hours in March.
