San Francisco Weather - A mild and sunny year round climate
Although the state of California has a Mediterranean type climate, the city of San Francisco is unique for the region in that it has a much more temperate weather system of cooler summers due to the frequent sea fog which reaches inland from the Bay area. Throughout the year temperatures are relatively stable with only a little variation and rainfall is low, even in winter months. San Francisco weather offers a healthy, outdoor loving lifestyle where many adventurous pursuits such as sailing, hiking and horse riding can be enjoyed through the year. This climate is also perfect for a wide range of crops from wine growing, olives, citrus fruits and dates. Clear skies and warm sunshine is a feature throughout the year and temperatures very rarely drop below freezing, even during a midwinter's night.

There is a long period of sunny, yet mild San Francisco weather from March to October where at least 8 hours of daily sunshine can be enjoyed rising to an average of 10 during July. Summer temperatures are warm and comfortable with around 21c in September. On rare occasions extreme heat waves are possible where temperatures can reach up to 38c. Both rainfall and humidity is low during the summer and between the months of July and August, only the occasional wet day should be experienced with consistent blue skies. Coastal winds become stronger during late summer but are very rarely severe enough to adversely affect the enjoyment of a seafront al fresco meal.

Winter sunshine is crisp and bright and mild to warm temperatures ensure a San Francisco city break can be enjoyed to the full without any disruption. Sunshine will last for 5-7 hours on average between January and February and temperatures of up to 13c. Mornings tend to be sunny, giving way to late afternoon cloud and there is always a chance of thick sea fog. Rainfall occurs most frequently in January and February which can be heavy at times and prolonged showers are possible. Slightly further inland into the countryside, average temperatures are warmer during winter yet also sees more frequent days of overcast and damp weather, especially at higher altitude. San Francisco weather is very unlikely to see severe wintry conditions such as heavy snow or frost although nights can often feel a little chilly with blustery coastal winds.
