St Mark's Square (Venice)

Piazza San Marco is one of Venice's most recognisable landmarks, and has been the focus of urban life for Venetians ever since the 9th century. It has always been at the heart of social, political and religious life and it surrounding buildings attest to its long and colourful history with fine examples of Byzantine, baroque and renaissance architecture. The Piazza is dominated by the grandiose St Mark's Basilica and campanile, or clock tower which at over 300 feet tall provides fabulous rooftop views of the city and lagoon. It is easy to lose a whole day among the historic landmarks that surround the piazza. On short breaks in Venice, you will encounter the magnificent gothic Doge's Palace and the iconic Bridge of Sighs, there is the captivating Museo Correr, the National Library of St. Mark’s and the Museo Archeologico, all guaranteed to fascinate art and history buffs. Just as emblematic is the vast population of pigeons which have been an ever present feature of Venetian life for centuries. 

 

Despite its iconic status and huge popularity, St Mark’s Square still has a dignified presence and no one should miss this out of any Venice weekend breaks itinerary. The photo opportunities alone are priceless and there is nothing better than simply strolling across the Piazza with an ice cream and watching local life unfold. It is filled with quintessential pavement cafes and one time honoured Venetian pursuit has to be a cappuccino in the historic (and expensive) Caffe Florian or Gran Caffè Quadri. Both have stood here since the 18th century and delight diners daily with their very own full size orchestras.
