St Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin)

Constructed in the 12th century in honour of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the official national cathedral for the Irish nation. It is an imposing structure in early English Gothic style design, with a prominent steeple that can be seen towering above the city skyline. Today the cathedral is open to all as a historic and architectural attraction, but continues to operate as an important place of worship for Dubliners. On weekends in Dublin, you can hear all about the historic origins of its celebrated Choir and Grammar School, and the colourful life of writer and philanthropist Jonathan Swift, a former dean of the cathedral who is buried here.

 

There is a full program of religious and remembrance services held throughout the year, and the cathedral has seen dignified state funerals for Irish presidents and prominent weddings. Festive season short breaks in Dublin can savour the spectacle and tradition of Christmas Eve at the cathedral and during St Patrick's Day celebrations, it is a hive of frantic activity. If you are in town at the time, do not miss a performance of Handel's Messiah, which has been a regular fixture here since the 18th century.
