The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Tallinn)

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral - An imposing photogenic sight
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the most dominant feature of Tallinn's historic skyline, and arguably the finest example of orthodox Russian architecture in the Baltic region. It sits on top of Toompea Hill overlooking the medieval old town, and features typically flamboyant onion domes in exuberant colours. Built in 1900, it is the largest and grandest of Tallinn's churches and dedicated to local folk hero Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, also known as the Prince of Novgorod. On city break getaways to Tallinn, you cannot escape its domineering presence wherever you wander and is one of the most popular photo opportunities and visitor attractions in the city.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – An artfully historic interior
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral has an opulent interior in keeping with its grand exterior facade and features glittering frescos, traditional tsarist Russian icons and Byzantine style mosaic wall adornments. There is a soaring bell tower with a full complement of 11 different church bells, the largest of which weighs over 15 tons. Wherever you are during long weekends in Tallinn, you will be able to hear them playing before each service. You can take a quick guided tour of the cathedral at weekends with plenty of informative commentary or just admire for yourself its venerable atmosphere.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – A beautifully restored piece of Estonian history
Thankfully for short breaks in Tallinn, the cathedral was completely restored to its former glory in 1991 after independence and only since then have locals been able to appreciate its significance as a cultural icon of the city. Prior to this it was viewed simply as a reminder of the oppressive Soviet occupation of Estonia and was almost demolished on several occasions. Just off the main entrance is a small exhibition space detailing its colourful history with a variety of artefacts and documents and interactive touch screen displays. Entrance is free to all outside church services and respectful dress attire is requested.
