The Basilica Cistern (Istanbul)

The Basilica Cistern – Historic underground reservoir
The Basilica Cistern, also known as the Sunken Palace, is a vast underground reservoir built in the 6th century AD to supply Constantinople’s imperial palaces with water. It is an impressive, evocative place that will figure highly on short breaks to Istanbul. It is steeped in history, featuring a forest of over 300 marble columns and measures an impressive 100,000 square feet in total. As you enter, there is the curious sight of two carved statues of Medusa, one of which is upside down and one sideways and always a major talking point with inquisitive visitors.

The Basilica Cistern – An inspiring showcase of light and music
Nowadays, visitors can walk along specially built boardwalks on either side of the water and spot carp swimming in the shallow water. There is atmospheric lighting, a soft music soundtrack and a historic narrative to accompany a visit. The constant drip of water seeping through the domed roof has a comforting sound and the shallow water itself seems to have a dark black colour, contrasting sharply with gleaming white Doric columns. It makes for a cool, contemplative break from the norm on cheap city breaks in Istanbul and a fine place to escape the heat and noise of the city.

The Basilica Cistern – An enchanting subterranean haven of calm
There is even an attractive cafe down here where you can sit with a coffee under candlelight and survey this ancient, inspiring place. As you look down the water channel, it seemingly goes on forever, gradually disappearing into the gloom. The effect of the floodlit columns reflecting into the dark waters makes for a totally unique and unforgettable photo opportunity. The Basilica Cistern is located very close to the equally popular Hagia Sophia and most weekend breaks in Istanbul combine a visit to both which will certainly make for an interesting and fulfilling day out for history buffs.
