The Blue Mosque (Istanbul)

Arguably the most famous mosque in the world, Istanbul’s Blue Mosque is a monumental landmark that dominates the skyline. Constructed in 1609, it takes its name from the 20,000 plus blue Iznik tiles that adorn its interior. Noted for its six towering minarets, which are virtually unique in the Muslim world, they encapsulate a series of cascading domes which are just as visually arresting. The main central dome is over 140 feet high and supported by enormous circular pillars. Short breaks to Istanbul can best appreciate its majesty and scale approaching from the west at the Hippodrome, or contemplating its magical aura from the vast forecourt which is always a buzzing hive of activity.

 

A tour inside the mosque, which is accessible for non-Muslims, will highlight a dazzling array of colour as sunlight penetrates its 260 stained glass windows. Intricate mosaics and tiling in blues and greens will provide a visual, extra sensory experience like no other. Of particular note are the great stone tablets adorning the walls, which are inscribed with inspirational verses from the Quran and a richly decorated minber, or pulpit where the imam would conduct his Friday sermon.

 

On summer city breaks in Istanbul, you can enjoy a spectacular light show at the Blue Mosque after dark, which includes a historical narrative in English several times a week. It remains a vibrant place for strolling families and curious sightseers in the evening and there are some well-placed cafes close by for taking in this magical landmark in all its illuminated glory. It is still a functioning mosque where the lyrical call to prayer echoes across the old city five times a day.
