The Chain Bridge (Budapest)

The Chain Bridge – An Iconic Budapest Image
The Chain Bridge is one of Budapest's most famous landmarks; a spectacular suspension bridge spanning the mighty Danube River. Constructed in the 19th century, it was the first to link the separate cities of Buda and Pest, and offers up a spectacular vantage point for viewing Budapest's most imposing sights. Illuminated beautifully after dark, on weekends in Budapest you will witness a sparkling feast of light reflected in the water against a backdrop of the nearby grandiose Parliament Building on the Pest side, and the ramparts of Castle Hill in Buda. This is the most romantic spot for a stroll in the city at night, and there are plenty of nearby bars, cafes and floating restaurants offering uninterrupted views of the bridge.

The Chain Bridge – A Festive Carnival Atmosphere
Ever since it opened, the Chain Bridge has played a significant role in Hungarian history. It was completely destroyed and subsequently reconstructed at the end of the Second World War, and has seen its fair share of public demonstrations. Today it is still considered a shining symbol for Hungarian freedom. Summer city breaks in Budapest can enjoy the celebrated Chain Bridge festival each July which features a festive cocktail of live music, dance, traditional Hungarian folklore and crafts. This month long arts jamboree offers plenty of fun for families with young kids too. You will encounter puppet shows, face painting, creative arts workshops and eccentric street entertainment both on the bridge itself and in the surrounding city squares.

The Chain Bridge – A Convenient Location for Sightseeing
This iconic 375 meter long bridge couldn't have a more strategic city location. Right in the heart of the tourist district, you can easily explore from here a whole host of Budapest short breaks highlights, such as The Hungarian Academy of Sciences and vibrant Clark Adam Square, named after the bridge’s Scottish engineer. From here you can take a funicular up to the historic Castle District for panoramic views over the city. There are numerous prestigious hotels lining the historic Danube Promenade, right in full view of the Chain Bridge which are unsurprisingly the most desirable places to stay in Budapest
