The English Garden (Munich)
|
The English Garden – A huge oasis of greenery right in the heart of the city
Munich’s very own green oasis is a huge public park that stretches from the city centre as far as the eastern city limits and with an area of over 900 hectares, it even dwarfs Central Park in New York for size. It is an incredibly popular summertime haven for locals and on busy holiday weekend breaks in Munich it can seem as though the entire population is here enjoying the sunshine. There is a wealth of sports and leisure activities for all ages and no shortage of intriguing landmarks to see too.
The English Garden – Exotic landmarks and fun activities
Its most imposing sight is the famous Chinese Tower, a huge wooden pagoda that dates from the 18th century. It is surrounded by a mammoth beer garden that can accommodate over 7,000 drinkers, offering a little bit of the Oktoberfest spirit all year round. The Oriental influence continues nearby at a quaint Japanese teahouse which holds a traditional tea ceremony each weekend and there is even an ancient Greek style temple, known as the Monopteros which affords great views of the city. For sporting city breaks in Munich you can go boating on Lake Kleinhesseloher See, there are over 10 miles of horse riding bridle paths and you will also encounter the curious sight of surfers riding the waves of the Eisbach River which dissects the park in two.
The English Garden – Plenty of picturesque secluded spots
Kids will love the charming carousels which have delighted generations of young visitors and there is also a small Children’s Museum. Since the 1960’s the English Garden has gained an infamous reputation for its nude sunbathing during the summer in the Schonfeldwiese meadow. Due to its size, there are numerous tranquil spots to escape to which include secluded ponds, thick wooded areas and rolling meadows populated only by wildflowers and sheep. If you are seeking a bit more action, head to the south of the park where on summer city breaks in Munich you will encounter a lively community of jamming musicians, groups practising tai chi or meditation and the occasional firework display and open air concert after dark.
