The Gothic Town Hall (Tallinn)

The Gothic Town Hall – Breath-taking city views
Built in 1402, the imposing Gothic Town Hall was the administrative centre of Estonian life for an incredible 700 years, and still to this day functions as a grand reception hall for visiting dignitaries. It is the dominant landmark in historic Old Town Square, a spectacular Gothic style structure that is the only one of its kind in Northern Europe. The most prominent feature is the renaissance tower which was added in the 17th century, rising over 200 feet and is open for sightseers to enjoy eye catching rooftop views of the city during short breaks in Tallinn.

The Gothic Town Hall – Exuding centuries of colourful history
The Town Hall is open to visitors daily during the summer who will savour its grand vaulted halls and brightly decorated colonnades filled with carved friezes and age old tapestries. There are exhibition spaces showing medieval costumes, an armoury, elaborate furniture and silverware. There is even a medieval restaurant on the premises. On cheap city breaks in Tallinn, you do not need to venture far to explore more of the city’s glorious past. At the rear of the Town Hall is an interesting photographic museum housed in a former medieval prison or simply cross the historic marketplace to the Pharmacy, the world’s oldest surviving chemists that houses its own museum. This is also reputed to be the birthplace of marzipan.

The Gothic Town Hall – A vibrant calendar of civic festivities
The Town Hall is a suitably grand setting for occasional gala concerts of classical music and dance, and will surely be a highlight during weekend breaks in Tallinn – if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket. Inside and outside the Town Hall there are events and festivities throughout the year and none more spectacular than ‘Old Town Days’, a colourful medieval pageant that seemingly the whole city gets involved in. The Gothic Town Hall is also the place to be during Christmas festivities and has hosted a seasonal funfair and market for centuries.
