The Old Harbour (Dubrovnik)

The Old Harbour – A monumental historic landmark
Dubrovnik’s medieval harbour is steeped in history and forms a prominent part of the citywide UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the most photographed images in Southern Europe, with its steep limestone walls contrasting sharply with the azure Adriatic Sea. It is sandwiched between the imposing St John’s Fort and the Porporela breakwater and filled with small fishing vessels and yachts bobbing in the calm waters. A stroll along its picturesque promenade is an essential Dubrovnik short breaks activity as the sun sets, and it is fringed with charming open air cafes, bars and seafood eateries.
The Old Harbour – Still a lively working port and marina
Throughout the day, it is just as lively with all manner of sea going activity. There is a constant flow of sightseers disembarking from Mediterranean cruise ships and public ferries leaving from the short journey across to the picturesque island of Lokrum, one of Dubrovnik’s most popular out of town day trips. If you are feeling flush during weekend breaks in Dubrovnik, you can charter a yacht or catamaran for the day and explore the turquoise waters or try your hand at deep sea fishing. Guided sea kayak excursions are also a popular distraction.
The Old Harbour – Inspiring history and family fun
Exploring the Old Harbour walls on foot is a must for anyone interested in a little medieval history and there are many intriguing gates, towers and the monumental fortress of St John that will certainly catch the eye. The fort is now home to an impressive Maritime Museum, the city aquarium and an open air theatre. On family city breaks in Dubrovnik, you could quite conceivably spend the best part of a day here. It is also perhaps the very finest vantage point for expansive views over the harbour and a popular evening haunt for strolling couples.
