The Oude Kerk (Amsterdam)

The Oude Kerk – Historic and Captivating Place of Worship
The Oude Kerk, translated simply as 'Old Church, is in fact the oldest surviving building in Amsterdam. Construction was completed in the early 14th century, and it boasts a host of intriguing features and unique architecture. In typical Dutch fashion, this most revered place of worship is located in the heart of De Wallen, which is the city's infamous Red Light District. On cheap city breaks in Amsterdam, you will find many curious features such as elaborately adorned choir stalls, yet it has never had a choir and its entire floor space is covered with ancient medieval graves.

The Oude Kerk – Beautiful Decorative Fixtures
It boasts highly decorative stained glass windows and one of the finest baroque organs in Europe. There are several side chapels set around the aisles, including the Iron Chapel which served as a vault for all the city's archives and most important documents which are still in existence today. On short breaks in Amsterdam, you can ascend to its bell tower for delightful canal and city views and there is also a small exhibition space dedicated to the celebrated 17th century composer Jan Sweelinck who was the principle organist here for over 40 years.

The Oude Kerk – Prestigious Exhibitions and Music Performances
The church has excellent acoustics and is often used for gala choral and classical concerts, and illustrious names such as the BBC singers and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields have performed here in the past. Each spring the Oude Kerk also hosts the prestigious World Press Photo Exhibition. On weekends in Amsterdam, you will hear the famous bells of the Oude Kerk ring out every Saturday and Sunday, and it is also an atmospheric place to be during Easter and Christmas festivities. After dark it is bathed in dignified illuminations and offers a calming alternative to the garish neon lit Red Light District.
