The Residenz – A Monumental Royal Palace
Known simply as the Residenz, Munich’s Royal Palace was the seat of Bavaria’s royal family for several decades. Located in the centre of the old town, The Residenz is now a huge complex containing 10 courtyards and its museum alone is made up of 130 rooms. Originally a castle stronghold built in the 14th century, the Residenz is brimming with a rich collection of art, furnishings and treasures from all over the world. On cheap city breaks in Munich, you will start at the impressive Antiquarium, a former Renaissance banquet hall that houses dozens of 16th century frescoes below a beautiful vaulted ceiling.
The Residenz – A Treasure Trove of Classical Art and Furnishings
There is a lot more to see on a guided tour that lasts around two hours, and a major highlight is the Baroque Ancestral Gallery which comprises the Porcelain Cabinet and its fine collection of oriental rugs, or the Rococo style ‘Ornate Rooms’ which house just a few of the many sumptuous royal apartments. Art lovers on Munich short breaks may feel a little giddy after a while with room after room opening up to offer a glimpse of yet more spectacular art and furnishings. In addition there are important collections of tapestry, weaponry and coins, bronze work, pottery and the royal crown jewels.
The Residenz – A Sumptuous Venue for Classical Entertainment
You will explore most of the inner courtyards which come in all shapes and sizes and designed in a variety of architectural styles, each adorned with neo classical statues and usually a central Baroque fountain. By the northern wing is the Court Garden, an elaborate French style ornamental garden that is the perfect place to catch your breath after so much browsing in wonder. It also contains several beautiful Renaissance arcades and a theatre museum. Elsewhere at the Residenz, on Munich weekend breaks you can savour classic high brow entertainment at the spectacular Cuvilliés Theatre, which puts on sumptuous gala performances of opera and music during summer months and is definitely not to be missed.
