The Royal Palace – An opulent royal residence
The Royal Palace is one of Madrid’s most impressive landmarks and one of its most visited historic attractions. It is a monumental palace constructed in the 18th century, and although it is officially the royal residence of King Juan Carlos, it is used primarily for state functions. At all other times a large part of the building is open to the public. It was furnished in typical opulent style by King Charles III and visitors will be immediately struck by the grand sweeping staircase as you enter. Arty weekend breaks in Madrid can savour some priceless work of art commissioned by monarchs through the centuries. There are exuberant works by Velázquez, Goya and even Caravaggio and some exquisite furnishings.
The Royal Palace – Lavish interior design
Guided tours around the palace will explore the elaborate throne room complete with red velvet walls, the china porcelain room and the gigantic state banqueting hall. The West Wing houses the Royal Armoury, with a vast collection of weaponry dating back to the 13th century. On cheap city breaks in Madrid, you will enjoy other highlights such as the highly decorative imperial ballroom, the hall of columns and the royal bedchambers. The Royal Palace is also noted for priceless collections of tapestry, ceramics and has the only complete Stradivarius string quintet in the world.
The Royal Palace – Savour commanding rural views
The exterior of the Royal Palace is just as captivating, overlooking a commanding courtyard displaying decorative statues of the emperors of the Inca and Aztec nations. There are also numerous other statues and fountains dedicated to past monarchs. From this vantage point there is a fabulous and rather unexpected view across rolling fields and woodland, even though its location is just minutes from the bustling city centre. On short breaks in Madrid, you should get to the Royal Palace early to miss the long queues and book an English speaking guided tour in advance to avoid disappointment.
