The Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Edinburgh)

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery – An Impressive Gothic Mansion House
Opened in 1889, this is the first dedicated portrait gallery in the world and offers a visual history of Scotland and its most prominent citizens through the ages. You will find priceless portraits of royalty, politicians, rebels and rogues along with famous sports stars and actors from the modern era. Many exhibits come from the hands of celebrated international artists such as Van Dyck, Rodin and Gainsborough and the permanent collection also features sculpture, photography, decorative arts, coins and medallions. A short break in Edinburgh will find that arguably the most impressive work of art is the building itself. Located on Queen Street, it is a commanding 18th century neo gothic mansion built in red sandstone.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery – A Journey Through Scottish History
There are lots of recognisable public figures from Scottish history on show from the Stuart monarchs, Robert the Bruce, Mary, Queen of Scots, Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. Edinburgh weekend breaks will see some stimulating modern photography that captures historic occasions and famous figures. All works are displayed in thematic rooms so that art lovers can also follow the historic significance of each painting. There is colourful art inside and out and lots of elaborate sculptures guarding the entrance.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery – Fascinating Arty Events and Activities
In conjunction with the national galleries of Scotland, younger visitors can enjoy a whole host of weekend arty activities at the Portrait Gallery which include a creative art club, easel sketching, treasure hunts, talks and discussions and film screenings. There is bound to be at least one temporary exhibition during a weekend break in Edinburgh which usually offers a more cosmopolitan flavour with international paintings, sculpture, photography and decorative art collections.
