The Trevi Fountain – The most iconic fountain on earth
The Trevi Fountain is arguably the most iconic fountain in the world, patronised by thousands of people every day hoping for a little of its timeless romance to rub off. It is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, standing over 85 feet high and has gained an iconic status among visitors to the eternal city. It has been immortalised in such movies as 'La Dolce Vita' and 'Roman Holiday' and even today exudes elegance and glamour in spite of its mass popularity. It dominates the small city square of the same name and is located facing the imposing palace of Palazzo Poli. It is definitely a must for romantic breaks in Rome.
The Trevi Fountain – An exuberant work of art
It has a typically theatrical design with a large imposing triumphal arch above bas reliefs depicting Neptune, the god of the sea riding two winged sea horses. It is certainly an ambitious work of art and makes for an especially photogenic image when beautifully illuminated after dark. Throughout the day, the square is often full to bursting point with tourists, and while on short breaks in Rome you would do well to get here early in the morning to experience the Trevi Fountain at its most serene.
The Trevi Fountain – Toss a coin for good fortune
It is estimated that over 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain every day, and tossing a coin in the waters has become a time honoured Roman experience for all who visit. Legend has it that throwing a single coin will guarantee that you will return to Rome someday and a further two coins will assure you of love and marriage with an Italian. On long weekend breaks in Rome, you will be able to soak up a vibrant cafe culture, and there is always an animated atmosphere, ripe for the quintessential Italian pastime of people watching. |
